Log your teen’s practice drives.

Start the timer before you pull out. Press and hold to stop it once you’ve parked. Moonroof splits each drive into day and night minutes and keeps a running total toward the hours your state asks for.

Drive in progress

Started 6:52 PM · with Dana

0 min in daylight 0 min after dark Sunset 7:18 PM

A sample drive, sped up about 100 times.

How it works

  1. Moonroof asking who is riding along, with four adults to choose from.

    Pick who’s riding along

Add each parent or adult once. Before a drive, tap whoever is in the passenger seat. Their initials go on every drive they supervise.

  2. A drive in progress at 1 hour 12 minutes, with 18 minutes in daylight and 54 after dark.

The timer stays on the Lock Screen

It also shows in the Dynamic Island, so nobody has to keep Moonroof open. Stopping takes a press and hold.

  3. The logbook, listing each drive with its day and night minutes and the adult’s initials.

    Night minutes from sunset times

If you allow it once, Moonroof works out sunset for your rough area. Where a state counts night from 30 minutes after sunset, Moonroof does too. You review the split before saving and can change it.

  4. The practice plan showing 38 hours 20 minutes of 50, and 2 months left before the license.

    What your state still needs

Below the hours, the plan lists your state’s classes and the steps before the road test.

  5. Checking a printable log before sharing it: 38 hours 20 minutes across 32 drives.

    Export the log

Send a spreadsheet of every drive any time, free. The printable PDF log is part of the $3.49 purchase.

Questions

Something else? Email support@moonroofapp.com. It goes to David, who makes Moonroof.

Is Moonroof an official state log?

No. Moonroof is your family’s own record. It isn’t made by, or connected to, any state agency, and it doesn’t send anything to one. Some states want the hours on their own form, or signed on the license application. Moonroof shows what your state asks for and gives you the totals to copy over. Check with your state before the road test.

Does Moonroof track where we drive?

No. It never records a route. If you say yes, it reads your rough area once to work out sunset times, and keeps only that rounded-off area. You can say no and enter day and night minutes yourself. The privacy policy has the details.

Do we need cell service during a drive?

No. Starting, timing and saving a drive all work offline. Weather suggestions need a connection, and if there isn’t one you can pick the weather yourself. The iCloud copy catches up once you’re back online.

Who should handle the phone during a drive?

Never the driver. Start the drive before the car moves and end it after you park. If the adult in the passenger seat needs the phone mid-drive, they handle it. Follow your state’s hands-free law. In Massachusetts, drivers under 18 can’t use a phone at all while driving.

Can both parents use it?

Add as many adults as you like, and each drive records who rode along. The log itself lives on one iPhone. A second parent with a different Apple Account can’t open the same log on their own phone, but you can send them a spreadsheet or a printable log any time.

What happens when we get a new iPhone?

If iCloud is on, Moonroof saves a copy of the log to your own iCloud after each drive. Sign in to the same Apple Account on the new iPhone, open Moonroof, and it offers to bring the log back. You can also save a full copy as a file and bring it back yourself from Settings.

We forgot to time a drive. Can we add it?

Yes. Tap the plus button in the logbook to add a past drive with its start and end time. It’s labeled Manual entry, so it’s always clear which drives were timed and which were added later.

Can we keep logs for more than one teen?

Yes. Add each learner in Settings under Learners. Each one gets their own log and their own plan.

Which phones does it work on?

Any iPhone with iOS 18 or later. There’s no iPad or Android version.

How current are the state rules?

Each state’s rules come from its official sources, and Moonroof shows when they were last checked. Rules change, so check with your state before the road test. If something looks wrong for your state, email support@moonroofapp.com with a link to the official page.
